Travel on a shoestring
House sitting is a fun, immersive way to experience this magnificent country - without paying a cent for accommodation!
Mid North
Jacky
Hi,
Marty and I live on 40 acres of grassy woodland about 6kms south west of Clare in South Australia’s Mid North. Clare is a mid sized country town (population 3200 people) and is well known for its many wineries and the Riesling Trail - a 33km flat, gravel track used by cyclists and walkers. The town has all of the shops and services needed for comfortable, healthy country living.
We are booked to travel to Canada to visit my son for 2 weeks in March (8th - 21st).
In the past we have been a part of native animal rescue and currently have 15 adult Roos in our care. We also have 12 sheep, a handful of chooks, some fish and a Ragdoll cat called Tonka. Feeding our animals and caring for our small garden would take approximately an hour each day with tasks needing to be done both morning and afternoon. You will need to get into the yard with the kangaroos so you must be comfortable with this.
We are looking for a couple or family to help us with this sit. It would be preferable if you had experience with native animal care and sheep. This isn’t crucial but it would be an advantage if something were to go wrong while we were away. ( We have a good relationship with the local vet and would leave you with the contact numbers of people you can call if you needed support)
We would prefer if you didn’t have pets because of the nervous nature of our kangaroos, but we would consider applicants with quiet, well trained animals that are happy to be on a lead or inside the house.
We would also ask that you arrive at least 1 day early for the sit so we can take you through the feeding routine and special care instructions.
You would have access to our newly renovated, one bedroom house - there’s room for a couple of swags/mattresses on the lounge room floor if needed.
There is room on the ‘lawn’ near our front and back doors for a caravan if you prefer to stay in your own accommodation.
My daughter Ash, who will be coming with us, lives in Clare and has 3 cats. It would be great if our sitters could go into Clare each day and feed her cats, maybe sit and watch tv for a bit to keep them company or sit out and have a coffee on her deck with them. But this isn’t a deal breaker. She is happy to pay $20/day for this service.
We’re happy to answer any questions before you commit.
Regards,
Jacky and Marty.
