There’s something really cool about not being tied down to a mortgage or to a rental agreement. It sounds tough – but if you have a sense of adventure and are willing to be flexible, becoming a house sitter can really have a lot of benefits.
Many people become house sitters because they love adventure. Whether it’s house sitting on a holiday or while working a full-time job in your hometown – house sitting is really exciting. Explore a new suburb, see the way others’ live – being a house sitter opens up a whole world of discovery.
If you are house sitting long-term and you’re not paying rent or a mortgage elsewhere, house sitting can save you a bunch of money. My partner and I saved over $160,000 in rent alone when we house sat for six years between 2014 and 2020.
When you house sit, you become a minimalist. If you are getting shorter house sits, you might be moving every few weeks. Moving all the time really makes you evaluate what you need in your life and you’ll find that some items never get taken out of your suitcase or your car. It becomes a drag carrying things you don’t use, and it’s a great way to weed out the non-essential items.
Getting to experience new areas is a huge benefit of house sitting. Depending on your circumstances, you can decide how far away you can house sit. My partner and I had full-time jobs in Sydney, and we took house sits everywhere from Wollongong to Wisemans Ferry. This was not always easy – but it was a great way of exploring and getting to know different suburbs and areas.
If you are unsure where you want to buy or rent, or simply want to explore a new part of Australia – house sitting is fantastic.
House sitting also gives you a great opportunity to travel. Many people make their way around Australia in a car or caravan over a long time-period, and with an Aussie House Sitters membership, it’s easy for them to get house sits in different states.
Finally, if you are an animal lover, this one’s for you! Most people hire sitters because they have pets. If you love big dogs, but don’t have the space for one in your backyard – become a sitter. You get the fun of being with the pets without the long-term responsibility. Of course, while you’re there, the pets are your responsibility 100% and you must stick to their routine as best as you can.
Whether you are saving for something big or just want an adventure – house sitting is full of awesome benefits.
May I say you have been very professional, efficient, friendly, and a real pleasure to deal with. My experiences have been great, a nice change of scenery, and nice pets and their owners. Keep up the great work and best wishes. Ray
